Girls in STEMM: Merck Virtual Visit

On December 13th, Merck China hosted a highly interactive virtual visit for students from three Beijing schools participating in the Girls in STEMM program: DCB (Dulwich College Beijing), CISB (Canadian International School of Beijing), and Keystone Academy.

Julie Fu, Merck China DE&I Business Partner, welcomed the students and teachers and introduced representatives from Merck and WEC. She invited the students to participate in an online quiz based on their prior knowledge about Merck. Afterward, an introduction video was shared to help students learn more about Merck as a vibrant science and technology company.

Students then participated in a fun group activity that provided hands-on experience building a company’s organizational structure based on how they believed different functions should collaborate to support and drive the business. Student representatives from each group shared the final organization charts with the whole cohort, as well as the reasons behind their decisions.

Next, several female leaders at Merck, including Lydia Ma and Ning Chang from Healthcare, China R&D, Xiaoyu Cui from Life Science, Jia Jia from Electronics, and Steffi Wang from Human Resources, presented their backgrounds, daily jobs, and career stories. After the insightful presentations, the leaders broke out into different rooms to allow students to engage in a Q&A session where their curiosities and interests could be addressed.

Through the 2-hour virtual visit, students gained first-hand experience and real-world insight into how STEMM jobs work in practice, knowledge of Merck and the science and tech industry, and direct access to inspiring female role models.

We want to express our gratitude for the joint efforts and co-creation of this successful virtual visit by the Merck China team, students, and teachers from DCB, CISB, Keystone Academy, and the WEC team.
